I have a 1.9 tdi VW Beetle.I do alot of miles and the engine has been set to need less servicing than normal but I have to use a more expensive oil.I get this from my VW dealer cause I've been told I can only use their oil,but is there a alternative make of oil that I could also use??

You can get it in Hafords too. It's cheaper there - look for the oil labeled "especially for VW and udi engines".
Any modern multigrade engine oil is adequate for the modern engine.  If your TDI has a turbo fitted then look for multigrades that are suitable for turbo equipped engines.
