Okay guys
Help!!
My hubby wants a sat nav for xmas as well as the uk settings he wants usa maps for when we go on holiday. I want to get him the best for our money and have seen an all singing all dancing tom tom in halfords for £250 with usa maps included. Is tom tom the way to go? My research so far, indicates that Garmin is cheap to start with but not so good in the long run. Which sat nav is my best buy?

The Garmin is much better in many ways. The Tomtom is a triumph of marketing over technology !
No, tomtom is brilliant. We've got a fairly basic model and it makes
driving in the UK and all over Europe so much easier. Got loads of
features and is quick and easy to use.
Shut it away out of sight when leaving the car.
TTG's is right, also if the unit brackets to the windscreen on a rubber sucker make sure you wipe the windscreen after you remove the bracket. If a thief sees the marks on the windscreen he/she might just think that the until is kept in the car and decide to break the glass.
My Tom Tpm died at 14months old. Garmin his replacement works very well....he will be 2 at Christmas
I have only knowledge of Tom Tom 1 and whilst it is good it is far from 100%

Despite signing up to map updates it still hasnt got roundabouts installed 2 or more years ago - It reminds me to 'Keep Right' when all I would be doing is going left into a parking layby. At other times it doesnt advise me to keep right when I really nned to - It has led me into Tescos car parks more than once and finally the main road veers sharply left, I need to effectively go straight on but the voice and indicator are strangly silent.
