grinding brakes on Clio

Just noticed today that when I brake there is, on ocassions, a grinding sort of noise. I'm assuming its the brakes, can't figure out if front or rear. Is it likely to need new pads, new discs, or more? And any idea of cost (parts & labour). Thanks

am no mechanic but could be something as simple as grit between pad and disc.
alternatively, I'd suggest pads.

I would say it's prodably the front brake pads, about £25 / £30 A set.

ok, thanks for such quick replies. I will call the mobile mechanic I use, see when he can come & check them. If it were just grit/rust/dirt would it stop grinding fairly quickly, if the grit gets dislodged?

If you can hear grinding the chances are that the pads are worn down to the point where the disks are getting damaged.

You might have gotten away with it but it's most likely new pads and disks

Disks can be pricey £50-£60 each but you can get cheaper pattern parts

You can try some quotes from garages but they'll most likely want to get the car in to look betting that you'll say yes once they've got it in and have declared it unsafe to go elsewhere.

Alternatively order the disks and pads and get a mobile mechanic to fit them

If you are mech minded the job will take you if you have the right tools, 1. 1/2 hrs.
Phone Kwik Fit or similar to get an idea of cost of discs and pads. Most likely to be fronts only. Kwik Fit etc will do a free check and will also show you the problem before going ahead.
Dereck, Kwik fit, I understand your Q but I would think twice.
If you can hear grinding then the discs are most likley scored, ie knackered. You don't have to change them but you'll find that you use pads like no tomorrow if you don't because the gouges will be scrapping the pads. Most modern cars have a system to tell you when th the pads are low, did you ignore the warning? it sounds like a faint whine where a small piece of wire rubs on the edge of the disc when the pads are low, designed to stop the discs being damaged.
