Hi. I purchased a car Oct'08. The tax is now due, to my horror I realised today I forgot to send the new keeper supplement off to DVLA - it is filled out in my partners' name & dated Oct'08; we are both insured to drive the car (the insurance is in my name & he is a named driver) & we have a valid MOT cert - will I be able to get my car taxed today? I've read the rules on it, & I know the New Keeper Supplement is only valid for 2 months from the date you fill it in - is there any way round this? Any advice will be gratefully received thanks

PS - I still have the previous keepers' logbook - if that make any difference? Thanks in advance
First thing is to go down the post office and try and tax the car with the documents you have. They may or may not accept it. If not contact DVLA ASAP to tell them. As far as they know the car is still registered to the previous owner. AFAIK you will have to get the new V5 first. Sorry. Incidently, doesnt the previous owner have to send off the old V5 anyway which means the new one should have been sent out to your address?
I seem to remember that I managed to tax my car with the slip given to me when I bought a new car. Go to the post office with what you have is my suggestion.
Ahhh read your second post. The previous keeper should have sent this off when you bought the car.
This is from the Goverment vehicle tax website:-

If youre not shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records you cannot tax the vehicle. Youll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name. To get one, fill in form V62 Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate and post to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD. You may have to wait up to four weeks for a new certificate to arrive. In the meantime, you should keep your vehicle off the road.
Meg:

Unless you've done it by now, this is what you should do:

Take the V5 (Log Book) to the post office, plus your insurance documents and MOT, and you should have no problems taxing the car.

The post office should also advise you of anything else that needs doing.

Good luck.

Thanks to all who responded. I've rang the DVLA & explained the situ; they said, as I have the full log book, it is not a prob - I just have to fill in new keeper details & sign & send the info to them, who will post a new log book to me. So I feel so relieved as I have a 40 mile round trip to work each day & just couldnt afford the car off the road. But alas, I have the PO mistresses to contend with yet, and in my past experiences, find some can be worse than dragons!!

A perfect method for adding drama to life is to wait until the deadline looms large!

Thanks again folks

My missus runs our local P.O. and that's where I got my information from - she deals with such similar queries week in, week out.
can be paid on phone by credit card.....easy - no dragons.

You can pay mine with your credit card - DVLA dont care who owns vehicle, they just want the money.
You can also do it online
Bob, if it was done on line, the disc would be posted to the previous owner.
Paraffin- nothing like experience eh? was just pointing out the DVLA laws on the subject, wasnt inferring you didnt know what you were on about :-)
