Does my VW Golf have a clutch cable?

Clutch pedal on my MK4 VW Golf (1998) recently stopped working (it pops all the way in). The person who helped me tow it away says I wont need a whole new clutch as its just the cable. He told me to buy a clutch cable for around 10 and he'll fit it for me.

But I rang local German car parts dealer who told me MK4 Golfs don't have clutch cables and that its hydraulic?

I wont see the person who will fit the cable for a couple days and wondered if anyone could shed any light on my problem, and whether I will need a whole new clutch after all, because if I do I will just book it into a garage tomorrow instead of waiting!

Thanks.

if your golf has a hydraulic clutch then it has either somehow got air in the system or it has a leak somewhere in the system and it is loseing clutch fluid everytime you press down on the clutch pedal. so if it has a leak it is a find and fix job, or if the fluid has got to low because you have'nt been checking the fluid level regulaly then the system needs to be refilled and all of the air bled out of the system.
