Gallons or litres per mile

Why when petrol is sold in litres do car manufacturers still use mile per gallon in their fuel efficiency and on their in board computres rather than mile per litre. To work out cost you have to calculate litres to gallons or vice versa once you have filled up your car.

Most cars that have computers have settings to switch from gallons to litres
Litres is b******* anyway
Because if they use litres their British customers immediately ask them to translate their figures into something they understand. Plus all our maps and roadsigns are in miles, so if we're calculating this in our head as we drive, miles per gallon is more useful.
