Hi

My car insurance is due next month so I was doing the usual, checking confused.com as I do every year to compare prices.

My circumatances have changed, I used to have a drive where the car was parked and it was in a busy town. Now I live on an island off shetland where theres about 300 people on it and my car is in the street car park.

I was shocked to see that my insurance quote with all companies had gone up.

I've been driving for 7 years now and every year the quote has gone down.

Can anyone explain why this would be. I though living out in the country would be better than a town and therefore reduce my insurance

Parking on the road is a bigger insurance risk to parking on the street - it is more likely to get hit.

There are some insurance brokers on Shetland - it might be useful talking to them
it's all about risk i suppose - the riskier things are the more the premium goes up. Perhaps there is a lot of vandalism on the island because kids have nothing to do?
Perhaps there are frequent accidents on the ferry? (i dont mean it sinking or anything, just bumps and knocks)
Any change in area will give you a different price for insurance.

thanks for your comments

most of the residents here are pensioners and i have seen one of them already bump into the end of the ferry, but none of the bumps are anything you'd put a claim in for!!! could be them thats putting the price of insurance up because there is hardly any kids on this island.

where i lived before, i would have said would be far riskier than out here in the sticks. i was constantly seeing wing mirrors smashed and our back light got smashed in our drive.

this is definately a safer place and everyone knows each other
when you told your insurance company of your change of address as soon as you moved there - did they charge you extra for the rest of the year? if they didnt, or gave you a reduction it might be nothing about where you live, just the drive/road things ethel mentioned
also meant to ask - any ther change n circumstances (ie taken off/put on business use? Had a partner on there who has been taken off?

hi

the only thing thats changed is i've had a baby.

when i got my quotes the other day on confused.com it was 262 a year. if just gone to gocompare.com and the cheapest is 154 woo hoo. don't know how the quotes are so different but i'll be sticking with the gocompare quotes.

i've always used confused.com because i thought they were all the same. glad i've tried another comparison website

i've not yet told my insurance company i've moved because me moving and my renewal dates are that close together
As with all insurance you are obliged to inform them of a change of address. Failure to do so can invalidate your insurance.
