Car insurance question

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me - My car insurance is up for renewal next week and I want to reinsure with the company I am with (direct line) .

I have been with them for the last 4 years and have not had an accident or had any points on my license for that time.

I have just had a quote from them to renew my policy from next friday and they have given me a small discount for renewing. However yesterday I was flashed on a dual carriageway by a speeding camera - I thought the speed limit was 40 but was wrong and it was 30 - I was flashed doing 37. I obviously now need to wait to see if I am going to get points on my license - apparently up to 6 weeks?

My dilema is that I do not know if I inform DL that I may be getting a ticket now before I renew my quote. Obviously I am aware it will put my policy up, which is what I have to take on the chin for speeding, and that you have to inform your insurance co of any points - if I do not tell them until I know I am receiving the points does that mean I could void my policy if they find out I renewed knowing I had been caught speeding? Do they check my license when I renew and see that I may have points pending?

It may sound like a silly question but I have never had this sort of problem before and do not know if I tell them I have been caught speeding if I will loose my discount - only to later find maybe I was luck enough to get a camera with no film and neednt have lost the discount!?? I also dont know if I have to tell them about the points I receive or if the DVLA informs them for me?? The last thing I want is my insurance policy being voided for some technicality !

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

At the time you renew i.e now . You have no speeding ticket to report.
Tell them after you habe renewed.

Last time I got a speeding ticket, it didn't affect the cost of my insurance when I renewed it and I didn't lose any discounts.
Dont tell them, u may be lucky and the camera was empty..
I agree with tellboy, renew your policy as invited and only inform them once you have the points. As it sounds like your only conviction its unlikely to make much of an impact anyway. As for waiting for 6 weeks that seems far too long, I was under the impression they had to contact you within 2 weeks. When I got flashed I had the letter within 2 days!
well the thing is u have a duty to disclose any pending offences to ur insurers. it'll state this on on policy terms or statement of facts !!!...so best to make them aware !!
A flash is not a pending prosecution that needs to be reported - who is to say the driver saw the camera flashing?

Don't worry about it.
i agree with ethel - a flash isnt pending points - it could have fashed at someone else, there might not be any film in the camera, the person might get offered a speed awareness course, they might not have even been in the unlucky position to notce the flash!

Some areas offer a speed awareness course as an alternative to a conviction. It costs a little bit more than the fine but you don't get any points on your licence.
If this your first offence, at 37mph I think you would fall into this criteria so I would hold off telling your insurance company.
Until you receive the letter it is not even deemed to be a pending offence so go ahead and renew.
