You only need to insure the car but caravan ins is reccomended for fire and theft .

i think the caravan is insured provided it is attached to the car. if it is damaged whilst unattached it might not be.

The caravan would only be covered for third party damage, not damage to the caravan itself, so speak to your insurers.
