Had probs with a 1997 ...water was getting through the front somewhere and dripping on the fusebox ... all looked ok from the outside until I stripped the fusebox down and it was rotten inside ...do you get a wet patch on the flor, drivers side
do your electrical problems occur around the tailgate ? ie the fog lamps rear wiper or rear heater? if so checked the 3 prongs in the tailgate and the plate on the rear panel as these normally corrode and dont make a good contact ,hope this helps
I had an Escort about the same age as yours and i had loads of problems with the relay board inside the car under the steering wheel.
Many of the solder joints are very poor on this board and when they break down, thats when you start to loose various electrical bits on your car i.e lights, fuel pump, wipers, starter relay etc.
Unfortunatly there is not a lot you can do unless you are handy with a soldering iron and can spot dry jonts !!

the variable resistor for the heater blower/motor is burnt out.
