I think it'll be the Bugatti Veyron. Check this out;

There's a bloke down our local pub whos building a contender in the shape of a twin turbo 6.7 ltr TVR & aimong to go for the record, or did you mean standard road car? If so,I'd have to agree with Dagman.

Was watching an old 'Top Gear' on TV earlier today (sad - I know), but they tested a Koenigsegg (from Sweden) and seemed to be of the opinion that it was the fastest street-legal production car.

there was someone in orpington, kent who in the 60/70's, built a rollsroyce, with a spitfire engine i think, the first time he drove it he touched the throttle and it crashed into a railway bridge, i think he was timed doing qver 200mph on a public road by the police
not sure 100% about the accuracy of the details, me dad told me about it years ago, but i have read about it somewhere
anyone else know any details
I know the Bugatti is a quick car, but on a tight budget, I have a mate who has a Mk2 Fiat Uno Turbo ie, which believe it or not does 165mph. Its slightly modified but not bad for a 1.4i turbo engine. He also has a Mk1 Uno Turbo ie, which is standard and 19 years old, and that does 140mph. I know they aint supercars or anything, but they are low on insurance and cheap to tax and run. Gary-ET
fastest strret legal car in reality is either a minicab driver, white van man, sales rep in his mondeo/vectra or a post office driver in a transit rushing back to depot to clock off early
If you want something really fast with insane acceleration then 2 wheels is the way to go bud.
Curlyfilm,

The car with the spitfire merlin engine was known as "The Beast". It had a Rolls Royce radiator; RR took exception to this and insisted that the radiator was handed back to RR.

I heard a radio report a few years ago, the commentator read out the speed from 0 - 100mph in a few seconds, along with roaring of engine. Not impressive, until he said they were in reverse.

The germans brought in a speed limit on autobahns during the fuel crisis of the 70s. The driver of the Beast did not know this and was hammering west. The Germans thought that it was a low flying aircraft and he was in Belgium before they realised that it was a car.
I have found a link to The Beast.

As always, information from Wikipedia is to be treated with respect, as anybody can write anything.
The Beast is still moving.

I have seen it in Marbella, it has a Mercedes front now, not a RR one.
curlyfilm ... i saw that car ... he built a rolls-royce look-a-like with a 27 litre Merlin engine from a spitfire plane.

Rolls Royce took him to court because he used the front grill & flying lady emblem ... so he had to change it.

If my memory serves me correctly it was called 'The Beast'
the bugatti veyron is the fastest road legal car, but you cant buy them as bugatti made it as a statement.
if your looking for a fast road legal family car go for a nissan skyline gtr 34, i was in one with a friend and he didn't have his foot to the floor and we were doing 170mph.
I`d say any car that can reach 70mph which is the max legal speedlimit in the uk. speed kills
