Hi, I have just built a 2.1Zetec, which is fitted into a Mk I Escort - It has high compression pistons. The problem that I have is that it keeps burning out starters (3 in all) and has problems turning over. If I remove the spark plugs, so there is no compression, the standard unit turns the engine with no problems.

Should I get a high torque starter or is there an alternative.
Thanks in advance.

You should be using the 2.1 starter and check your timing is correct, it might be too advanced. If you already are using the 2.1 starter then yes you need something more powerful, perhaps a deisel starter might fit.
