Some scooters are now defined as mopeds. Originally a moped was a small motorcycle fitted with peddles. Now it can be a scooter or motorcycle up to 50cc that can not exceed 30mph.
Hairdryer is another popular name according to some people!!!!!

a scooter is a style of bike, scooters can have any cc and go above 30 mph.( unless it is a scooter styled moped, see below. )

mopeds have 50 cc engines and are restricted to 30 mph

What have a moped & a fat lass got in common?

They're great rides till your mates see you with them !!

Click for definition of a moped. Anything other than this can be either a motorcycle or a scooter depending on styling. Some people class "superscooters" like the Honda Silverwing as a touring motorcycle. That's a grey area but the definition of a moped is absolute.
