Sounds like a common prob on these cars, do you know what engine it is and engine mod number, if you do then these a good chance that we will help

The web site below is a link to vaux machanics forum, It is run indipendent of vaux and every one helps every one else, try to get the engine and reg and post the same question on this web site, P.s. what is the mpg that you are getting,

An oxygen sensor or lambda probe shouldn't be expensive, and it could be the cause of high consumption, because the injection ECU uses the data from the O2 sensor to adjust the mixture, and if its recieving a wrong signal like a weak mixture, it will enrichen the mixture to protect the catalyst and it will drink fuel. You can confirm the O2 sensor by sticking the car on a EGA (gas analyser) and seeing if the CO levels are high, if they are its likely that the sensor is away. I presume you mean the control unit when you say circuit board? Its unlikely the ECU would fail as they are usually quite robust, and bloody expensive when they do fail, I would go for the O2 sensor first as its the most likely.
My Toyota Corolla was running really badly: high fuel consumption, rough running. I had the O2 sensor (lambda sensor) replaced as suggested by the main dealer. And it made no difference...!!!!!

BUT they then reset the ECU to factory settings and hey presto all was well. To replace the sensor cost an hour's labour.. to reset the ECU took about 2 mins. In future with other cars I'll ask them to try that first, just in case the black box has thrown a hissy fit that can be easily rectified.
