they take video as you drive along.

Question Author

Do they save it in a memory card ? Do I have to keep wiping the card?

Yes they save it on a memory card. Generally the default will be to wipe the oldest videos once the card is full. Most of them have a button to say "do not wipe" if there is a vid you need to keep. Mine tends to have about 3 months worth on it at all times.

Are they worth getting? Does it reduce insurance premiums?

Do they only work when driving or do they have a proximity alert?

Sorry for so many questions and I appreciate your responses.

Mine saves to memory card and automatically permanently saves everything it perceives to be an incident, until I press the 'format card' button.  This means potential evidence isn't wiped.

Mine has the main camera in the front and a small one at the back. Neither are really visible inside or outside the car.  It connects to my phone by WiFi so I can view and save  footage on my phone if I want to.

It is hardwired in. I've had it at least 8 years without problem. It also warns me if I'm speeding or in a speed trap area.

yes I thoroughly recommend one, ideally facing back and front. Some companies may offer cheaper premiums but the real benefit is that you have evidence of whatever goes on. There are fraudster types who will stage crashes and do all manner of tricks to get a payout. There are Casserole that jump on your bonnet etc etc to try and claim injury etc. As soon as you show them the dash cam all that goes away. Just watch the show "caught on dashcam"

Mine can be set to work whilst parked and unattended using motion sensor but it could drain the battery so I rarely use that function

It reduces my car insurance but only because it was professionally hard wired

Most people think of them for evidence in case of an accident but there is the added bonus that, if the camera has GPS, it can also prove exactly where the car was at a given time; a company saying you were in a car park all day when you actually left and went back will be recorded with a time stamp. GPS models will also allow you to register the vehicle speed at any time; a bonus if you don't make a habit of speeding.

They are worth getting to prove your version of events in any particular situation is the true one. The trouble people like I have is convincing others that is so, when these others can't differentiate between the dregs of society who wouldn't know truth if it hit them in the face (and of whom they have more experience) and decent folk like myself.
