It’s my car’s first time having a service and MOT (it’s 3 years old).  Are there any pros and cons to this service?  Or should I drive it there and wait at my dealer?  They're charging £30 for this.

I've used this service from my Volvo dealer for many years. It started off when the service manager said he only lived down the road from me and would pick up thr on his way to work in the morning and drop it off on his way home (free); the alternative was a free loan car for the day (just replace fuel used). After a few years they wouldn't let him do that but sent a man...

If you have the time then do it yourself, if you don't and can afford the £30 then get them to do it.

It's entirely your choice. You don't have to wait at the MOT station, you can go for a walk, go to nearby facilities such as shops, a café.

depends how far away, how will you get back after you leave the car? How will you get there to collect it? £30 is a deal if it suits your situation.

Thank you so far xx

A service + MOT could take a couple of hours. Do you want to hang around that long? I would probably pay the £30.

I usually wait for just an MOT but that's about 45 mins.

I've used this service from my Volvo dealer for many years. It started off when the service manager said he only lived down the road from me and would pick up thr on his way to work in the morning and drop it off on his way home (free); the alternative was a free loan car for the day (just replace fuel used). After a few years they wouldn't let him do that but sent a man specially to collect and deliver - still free. At some point the dealership, reputed to be the first in the country, was taken over by a larger concern and last year I notice a charge had been made (£25), refunded when I complained but charged this year after being warned about it. It's also interesting that until the takeover they returned the car and sent a bill in the post, which I always paid immediately; now they ring up for payment before the car is returned. Just a sign of the times, perhaps. We happen to have dashcams in the car and the car has always been driven to and from the dealership very carefully.

Are there any shops or cafe/restaurants near the dealer? You could drive there and spend the £30 on yourself, don't forget, they're using your fuel to drive there car anyways.

Thank you again, people xx

The problem with waiting is that mechanics never work to a schedule you could be there all day. I'd take the £30 deal.

Yes, I'll take the deal.  👍

Yeah unlike our MOT's which take 15 minutes and is a done at the booked appointment - as pointed out you could be there all day - well worth the £30 imho

We used to use Dagman's suggestion, there being a large Tesco almost next door to the garage. That's fine so long as the service doesn't throw up some work which needs doing which will extend the time or you have to return the car sometime.

I used to use this service, it was very handy as we live out in a village, not town. It saved a lot of time and worry

I'd pay the £30 - then if the car needs some work you can just let them get on with it and not be hanging about or trying to get home from where the garage is
