I stopped on the top of a 200yard slip road and pulled over to the left as far as I could as I heard aloud bang /emergency. Police stopped and have charged me with stopping on the carriage way of a motorway. Was I on a motorway or a slip road and is the charge incorrect

...although, I suspect that a slip road is, legally, a part of the motorway proper.

The slip road is part of the motorway

You are not supposed to stop on the slip road, the police obviously did not feel your emergency was and emergency!

The slip road is part of the motorway

What was the loud bang?

The bang may have been somebody's jaw hitting the floor having seen actual police folk.

they are bang on, never ever stop on a slip road, ever!

TORATORATORA,  you are wrong, folk can stop on the slip road in particular circumstances as per the Highway Code.

"271
You MUST NOT stop on any carriageway, emergency area, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge except in an emergency, or when told to do so by the police, traffic officers, an emergency sign or by red flashing light signals." (Emphasis added)
