Now that broken down vehicles are unable to pull on to a hard shoulder, but remain on a live carriageway, shouldn't breakdown/recovery personnel get danger money ?

They should refuse to attend.

Perhaps then Shapps would get it into his thick head Highways Agency are a loose canon and need sacking.
If they take all the proper precautions i.e. cones flashing lights and that lane has been deactivated then no.
You going to do it then dustypuss?

Or is it ok for someone else to risk their life.

You do know what a 'smart' motorway is and how people are killed on them?
I would refuse to tow them off. Damn stupid idea "smart" my april!
It's still pretty dangerous on a normal hard shoulder, this live lane business is madness.
It's dangerous work anyway - their pay should already reflect that.
PS - cars that break down don't always end up on the hard shoulder. My Vectra cut out whilst overtaking in lane 3 - lanes 1 & 2 were occupied. Fortunately I was able to get onto a space on the central reservation.
The AA will not attend live lane breakdowns. The traffic officers attend to try and remove the breakdown and have the power to stop all live lanes to remove the vehicle to a safer place if possible. This is not always possible. Does 'Danger Money' still exist? I'm not sure how much traffic officers get paid, but they must attend, breakdown companies do not.
All drivers should get danger money for needing to use motorways deliberately made more dangerous.
I avoid motorways now, it's the getting on and off that's the most stressful.
// it's the getting on and off that's the most stressful. //

the rules seem to have changed over the years - it now seems to be the case that traffic already on the motorway must give way to joining traffic, either by moving to the right or if that's not possible, you must slow down.........
Neither the AA or RAC attend people who have broken down on a smart motorway without the involvement of Highways England who attend in conjunction with them.

I suspect it will be the same for all breakdown companies. Maybe Canary could do a bit of research and find out?
