They should be registered as proper vehicles with all the attached regs. Madness to let these things ride around on pavements etc.

Couldn't agree more TTT.
It's illegal to ride them in public places unless they are the official ones that you can hire. The West Mids Police has confiscated lots of them - and they won't be returning them to the owners
Question Author
but why are the "official" ones any different?
Restricted speed, TTT, and 'they' know who has hired them
Sounds like an early version of 'test events', barry.
Question Author
well they are all a menace, should not be on the pavements at all.
Question Author
no wonder the saucepans are fat!
The only difference, Tora, is that the hire versions have a maximum speed of 12.5mph, the hirer must hold a full or provisional driving licence and be over 18. They must also complete an online "safety course" before their first hire.

The most significant similarity with the privately owned (illegal) versions is that if a pedestrian is hit by one with an adult riding it at three or four times walking pace, the outcome will be much the same.

My local Plod has thankfully begun to seize the illegally used versions when the opportunity arises. The miscreants lose their scooter and are also hit with a £300 fixed penalty and six points (for no insurance). A "New Driver" (that is, one who passed his test less than two years previously) will have his driving licence revoked as a result of this and will have to take his test (both parts) again. Many of them are blissfully unaware of this (as my local rag testifies). They cannot recover their machine from the pound as to do so will require proof of insurance and scooters are uninsurable against Third Party Risks.
I don't know any fat kids.
Question Author

TORATORATORA, I don't know anyone with only one leg but that should not lead you or anyone else to reach a conclusion no-one in the UK has only one leg.

It seems that the kid was involved in an incident involving a hit-and-run drunk driver, driving on the wrong side of the road.
the scooters themselves may be illegal, and those riding them may be acting illegally. however they have the environmental wokerati on their side, and they're seen as the green alternative to fossil fuel powered vehicles. make no mistake, it's only a matter of time before the law is changed in their favour.
If a change in the law means that they are ‘street legal’ I can’t see any insurer covering them for third party risks.
I have never seen our local police stop anyone on an electric scooter, indeed was behind a police car recently who swerved to avoid one on the road and just kept on his merry way ( the driver was not an emergency call).
i have long said they are a pest, and at worst very dangerous, we have loads in the capital, many ridden on the pavements, heaven help the person who crashes into me that's all i can say.
They are considered to be 'green transport' so of course they will be untouchable and the government will jump through hoops to try and support them.
Maybe, TTT, I just live in a better area than you. You know, where parents feed their kids a good balanced diet.
