bhg, yes you're right that's the one, If you had to replace they were made a lot thinner as there was only a half inch gap between the two collars to try and put it in place, plus the two clips. You could never really see what you were doing half the time, all by feel, a real back breaker. I did a lot of swearing :0)))))))
My wife had an MG Metro, (not the turbo version), it wasn't a bad little car as I recall, pretty nippy and handled OK too. It looked really smart in metallic BRG and some nice alloys, and had an unrated interior too.
Never had a mini but my first car was a Ford Zodiac. Heavy on the petrol though, as the speedo needle went up you could almost see the petrol one go down.
I remember seeing an advert for an old Zodiac - "Drinks and smokes but loves children".
I think the end of the launch ad sums up the future of the Metro rather well: stuck in a dead end and going absolutely nowhere ;-)

Yes. I had one. Did everything I wanted it to do but fell apart with rust. First car was an A30, then a Fiat 500, then an A40, then a BMW 3 series, then a BMW 5.25. Then a re I can't remember so not important. Now got a mini. Goes well and does what it's supposed to do. (Most important it was the cheapest one they had for sale.)
I never had one but drove Metros at work a lot. If you kept the revs up they were reasonably nippy and I got a real kick from chasing down miscreants in bigger, more powerful cars.
We weren't supposed to use them for emergency calls but well, you know...
I got rammed in one by a drunk driver in an MGBGT, door popped open, I fell out and was dragged along the road burning a hole in the seat of my pants.
When just used conventionally as a 'Panda' they were great, never lasted long enough to rust though.
I know it is of no interest to anyone but my little mini is a 2-seater and that's why it was cheaper. No one wanted a 2-seater.
