In my 56 years of car ownership I've never had my car key unable to turn on the ignition due to the heat admittedly it had been in the sun all day ( can't park it anywhere else)I knew it couldnt be anything more even in1976 I didn't experienced this.so a day without my car. It was ok the next morning.now I've started on very hot days to put baking foil over the ignition / steering lock.
Anyone else had this ?

Modern keys and ignition barrels are very finely matched...if one part expands the key wont turn .

one of neighbours uses a heat screen over her windscreen
Do you mean the key turned but the car wouldn't start or that the key was too hot to touch? I'm a bit confused ( not hard ) :0)
When you say "stuck", do you mean that the engine will not fire, the engine will not turn over, or no ignition whatsoever(ie no wipers, indicators, etc) or that the key will not physically turn in the ignition barrel. Can't say that I have ever had such but am aware that non fuel injected systems can sometimes struggle when the fuel in the pumped system has evaporated causing air locks and such.

the key would not turn in the lock at all as if it were the wrong key

Was it definately your car? When I was young and had an Austin Mini. I remember getting into "my" car with the key. But for some reason the ignition key would not turn. It was only when I noticed how tidy the car was I then realised that it was not my car.
Sounds like the ignition barrel is either worn and when it expands in the heat a burr is not letting it turn, or if it is a new motor the barrel is still so closely matched to the case that expansion is jamming it. A bag of frozen peas may have worked or else you would have had to, ironically, hot wired it. :))
Or of course the steering lock may be doing something similar and not letting the ignition turn.
You see, there is a point in keyless ignition after all....
Try turning the steering wheel to the left and right and then turn the key.

Thanks but after 56 years of driving experience I do know about steering locks and moving it in certain conditions to free the lock
I don't suppose you're a two car family, those two cars being the same make? :-)

thanks for your answer and yes could be a burr that's expanded as it worked ok after cooling down over night probably due to some wear
That's not very nice Derek at 22.14 when people are trying to help, I've been driving as long, but I had the same problem, and then realised, how silly of me, ( I FORGOT THE STEERING LOCK ) all fine.
Please accept my most humblest apologies for attempting to assist you with your problem...Your car problem, that is.
Question Author
your first answer to my question is basic knowledge but thanks for you input, think we will leave it there
Basic knowledge can be over looked / forgotten, along with manners sometimes.
