satnav fail?
A sat nav ain't going to warn you of the height of bridges , is it ?
Bazile - you can get ones that do.
Reminds me ( sort of ) of a car park i used to use some years ago .

A dealership used the top level to store cars

The way the drivers use to drive the cars was appalling - lots of screeching etc , as they came down the various levels .

I often wondered how many owners took delivery of a ' damaged' car
Well - i'll go to the foot of our stairs - i didn't know that , bhg481
there's a low bridge near my office, on a narrow lane. trucks frequently block the lane as they reverse away from the impassable bridge. this often occurs because the drivers have a standard car satnav, rather than the more expensive one for trucks......

My Satnav warns of low bridges but as it's in an Estate Car I don't think there will be a problem ;o)
>>> A sat nav ain't going to warn you of the height of bridges , is it ?

Satnavs for commercial vehicles DO have mapping systems which include data on bridge heights (as well as weight limits, lorry bans, etc) but they tend to be considerably more expensive than satnavs for cars, so some transport firms try to cut costs by using 'ordinary' satnavs instead.
I suspect that the driver would not have known the exact height of his load. Box-trailers and containers have a known height, as does my car when I have my bike on the roof, but the height of car transporters varies depending on the particular cars carried.

I live relatively near to this accident site. I heard about an 'incident' on the radio this morning, but then forgot all about it.

The bridge is under the railway line, it is signposted. Surely the drivers of tall/high vehicles should be looking out for this problem.

Poor old pal of mine, lives in California, collects and restores Jaguar E-types. One of them featured on a Playboy Calendar.
He bought a $50,000 e-Type from across the USA and it was transported on a lowloader for restoration. The truck got caught up in a sweeping fast moving forest fire and the E-type needs more restoration than he hoped for. The truck driver escaped luckily. Malcolm, being a Brit was quite pragmatic about the damage and last I heard he is doing a step by step rebuild on Youtube. He will get there. He rebuilt US fighter aircraft all over the world for various Air Forces.

i suppose the firm the driver works for is going to give him the sack

He deserves it , no problem imo.
>>> I suspect that the driver would not have known the exact height of his load

Fair enough, Bhg481, but even a standard container lorry (4.2m high) wouldn't fit under a 4.0m bridge!

Had the cars on the top deck been cabriolets (which they are now) there would have been no problem.
I took the roof off a Hoeseasons holiday cruiser once at Potter Higham bridge on the Norfolk Broads. The sound of fibre glass and glass being ripped off the superstructure was gut wrenching. :-(
You and a few hundred others, Retrocop!

Those of us who live not far from the Broads know all about Potter Heigham bridge ;-)

Thanks Chris
That picture will give me nightmares tonight. I know how an MP feels when they 'lost their deposit'.
Annoying thing was I consulted the pilotage manual and pulled over to the starboard bank to ask the pilot in his cabin if the air draught was sufficient and could he take the craft through. H e replied in the negative because of the tidal range so I attempted a 3 or 10 point turn in the basin prior to the bridge. The craft was about 30ft long, single prop and when side on to the bridge the wind just rammed me into the bridge like a giant sail. News travels fast on the Broads and when I got back to the boatyard several days later the owners knew exactly where to find the damage. :-)
You can download bridge height information onto a standard satnav. I have.

We lived on the Broads in Wroxham, know PH Bridge very well. Had a speedboat , so had lots of fun on the water, most of it illegal but enjoyable, it is a lovely area was a good time in our lives.
