By paying tax monthly is it actually based month by month? We wish to sorn our car in a couple of months so if we pay monthly for 2 months would we then be able to sorn it and just cancel direct debit?

No. You pay a full years tax split into 12 monthly instalments. If you cancel the DD you still owe the rest of the years tax. You will have to send the tax disc back once you SORN the car and reclaim the unused portion of the full years tax. There will be a cancellation fee to pay.
Plus you can only reclaim unused full months of tax. Sending the tax disc back on the 1st of a month means that you pay to the end of that month. To reclaim tax for April for example you need to send the tax disc back postmarked by the 31st of March.
Tax disc?o
I just phoned them up and told them that I had sold the car - they cancelled it there and then and then I cancelled it with the bank - I didn't owe anything!
And I certainly didn't send back a tax disc that no longer exists
^ Do you mean you took the tax disc off the car and then phoned the DVLA? That is fine, the problem is when people sell a car with the tax disc still on it. That is now illegal, change of owner means a renewal of the tax in the new owners name.
There is no tax disc anymore!

Eddie we have not had tax discs for a long long time!
Eddie we haven't had tax discs for ages - 2 years??
Also there is no cancellation fee!
If you pay monthly and cancel it Eddie you don't have to reclaim anything because you pay monthly!
Doesn't time fly, September 2014 they were abolished.
Wow really Prudie it feels just like yesterday!
I do apologise, he's from Barcelona.
Eddie's answers are completely and utterly wrong - I would ask for a mod to remove them, but that then leaves a lot of other answers looking peculiar.

You can cancel a direct debit at any time - the vehicle must then either be Sorned or Taxed on the 1st of the next month, or you must inform the DVLA that you no longer own the vehicle.
Lol surely not Dave!
There is no monthly road tax only monthly payments. The tax is for a year at a time. But you can pay yearly, 6 monthly or monthly.

Read the link^ if you cancel a DD you have to make the payments by another method.
Yes, you can get a refund for unused months ,but the way to do it is not to just cancel the DD. You need to actually cancel the tax disc as well.
my tax is only £20 per year
