I've bought diesel additives in the past but continually forget to add it to the fuel. To be honest I doubt if I'd notice any difference. One would have to have had experience of a long period of not adding it and noting the results, and then on a similar vehicle a long period of adding it and noting the results for comparison. Chucking the occasional dose in, is done on trust.
Diesel additives have a parts that help absorb water that may be in the fuel . but there are also DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) cleaner types that help remove any building up of carbon deposits on the catalytic converters that are installed on the newer vehicles
I have always used Wynns Ivor, never had any issues regards the C/O on Petrol or Derv, check the rear of your exhaust pipe, is it Sooty? that will give you an idea what fuel the car is burning.

yes its a bit over sooty twr
i bought wyns from wilkos yesterday will do as instructed on the bottle regarding the amount of fuel /additive ratio, next time im due for a long motorway trip,
My nephew, who has worked for Fords since his 17th birthday, tells me that these additives are really only of use in older engines....they are just a waste of money for news cars.
Always use at service they help to clean injectors my car has done 87k with no problems.
We also use another form of additive in the boat engines makes for sweeter running.
^ Agree with mikey. If you have a modern Euro6 or Euro7 diesel
(sold since 2013) you do not need any additive. The particulate filters are automatic and deal with it without any extra attention. They do help with an older engine though.
^ Euro6 & 7 engines have both particulate filters and catalytic converters as well as 'Adblue' technology to remove NOX contamination. You do need to top up the 'Adblue' when necessary but that is only once in a year or two.
When was the derv Filter last changed Ivor? is it local driving, eg stop / start ? if so, drop a full bottle of Wynns in 3/4 tank of fuel, If you have a motorway / Duel Carriageway near by, give the car a blast, get into 3rd 4th, 3rd /4th if possible & make the engine work, depending on your car, some have 2 filters, one underneath out of view.
I bought my first new car in 1985 - it had fuel injectors. I decided I would use injector cleaner every 50,00-1,0000 miles to keep the injectors clean. That car did all but 200,000 miles before I scrapped it; the fuel consumption never changed over the 20 years. Since then all my cars have had fuel injectors and I've treated them all the same as the first with injector cleaner. The current car (a diesel) has just passed 165,000 miles, has never had a problem passing its MoT and has the same fuel consumption now as when I bought it new.
Have I been wasting my money? Who knows but the cost is trivial compared to all the other running costs. Furthermore, failing an MoT on emissions can be expensive, as can replacing fuel injectors. Will I continue to use injector cleaner? Most certainly.

TWR. the filter has not been change apparently its in the tank !
kia rio 2011, the cars running ok just thought i'd give wyns a go
I've read a lot of the advice given by Honest John, both on his website and in the Telegraph on Saturdays, and trust what he has to say. He has mentioned many times that the diesel particulate filter on diesel cars can be a real problem, and is likely to be an expensive fix after only a few years
I discovered by accident that my car (a diesel) gets a dose at each service - the garage swears by it.
Hi Ivor, I'm not questioning your reply regards the position of the filter but if you check it will be found outside of the tank on the fuel line, I can not see the makers inserting the filter inside the tank, as on a service this would take too much time to replace as a normal filters location, If it's possible with "SAFETY IN MIND" Check under the car from the tank Forward to Injector Pump. on 61000 I doubt injectors are needed.

TWR
indeed it is, the fuel pump is sunk into the tank, access under the rear seat and the filter is in the pump, its a garage job for me im afraid
