I have just had a quote from the above company and they are charging me an extra £29.00 because 3 years ago when I was insured with them someone drove into me in a carpark. The driver of the van admitted "sneezing" and didn't see me. I paid no money and neither did Saga. When my insurance needed renewing I got a cheaper quote with another company and there was no mention of this accident. I have now got a cheaper quote from Saga but with this excess. Anyone have any thoughts or advise please.

Shock headline : Insurance co uses spurious reason to increase premiums!

Not exactly unheard of. If you don't like it, get insurance from someone else again.
Rosie....have you spoken to a real person at Saga?...... If not try that and explain about the accident. I find that helps...

If you've already spoken to them....ignore me......☺
Insurance companies increase the premiums of people who've been involved in 'no fault' accidents because being involved in such accidents can be an indicator that they're not using 'defensive driving' techniques.

They have neither the time nor the resources to analyse exactly how each accident occurs (in order to find out whether 'defensive driving' could have prevented it), so they're forced to load the policies of all such drivers.

Did you tell Saga about the incident when it happened, or did you think it didn't matter because no claim was made? If you didn't tell them and they found out by other means you almost certainly broke a condition of your policy.

Hi. Yes Saga was notified and it was them who telephoned me to say that the driver is admitting to sneezing so no fault was the accident mine. I did ask at the time if it would affect my insurance and was told NO.
I'm afraid I have no time for companies such as this. If you're having problems trying to buy a policy, what will they be like if you have to make a claim?
If the other driver was at fault and admitted it he should have paid your excess. The excess is for having a 'claims history'. Having made a claim even for an accident that was not your fault gives you a 'claims history' , in the view of the insurance company it means they think you are more likely to make another claim in the future, hence the excess.
Too late now to claim it back from the other driver, I would point out to Saga that they should have claimed the excess from the other driver 3 years ago and ask them to cancel it.
Get a quote from Aviva. Proper company, and surprisingly good prices.
I've been with LV= for a few years now. Another company, like Aviva, which isn't on the comparison companies' list. Each year I check their price against others and it's cheap for the cover I want. There's NEVER been a loyalty penalty either ie, charge more for existing customers than new ones.
