Cannot agree on when MOT tests were introduced - I think around 1968 but my wife thinks earlier. Also how many steps from the original 10yr to the current 3yr

The MOT test was first introduced in 1960 under the direction of the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples under powers in the Road Traffic Act 1956.
I can recall the first cars subject to an MoT were ten years old or more. When they passed they were given a sticker with the three triangle symbol and the words "Ten Year Tested" underneath.
Yes, and I can recall my car's handbrake being tested by the examiner pushing with the handbrake on and me sitting in it !
