You can still use the paper one.
It will just get updated next time you need to submit your licence, expiry, change of address etc. or you can update it by submitting it and requesting a new one.
i believe you have to apply for a photo licence when you reach 70
If you have an up to date passport you can apply for a photo license on line and they use your passport details and pic.
You still get a paper licence with the card and some car rental companies insist on seeing it (but don't tell you before you try to pick up a car at the airport that you have previously booked )
jomifl - the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence was abolished last year...

@ Aberrant, :-)
I had to do the 'speed patronisation course' recently and managed to keep mine.
I'm clinging onto it for as long as I possibly can ...I'd rather not have to succumb to the voluntary ID card.
When mine expired I had to send it (green paper one, never any points entered, as issued some 40 years ago) as part of the application. I asked to get it back with other documentation but was told they won't return it because "it is worthless". To me it is of great sentimental value and, yes, it is of no value to anyone else - the woman was quite uppity/officious about it and it has vanished into the general mess that is the DVLA. If you want to keep yours as a memento/souvenir then the only way to do so is to lose it.

Thanks for the heads-up, when the time comes for mine to be handed in, I'll "lose" it.
