I have been with First call GB for several years now but luckily not needed them. My car is now 10years old so may start needing them. The breakdown cover is now due but reading the reviews for First call I find they are horrific, couldn't believe them. I just need cover for uk so has anyone any suggestions please?

I am very happy with RAC. Car broke down as I started my journey - so still outside my house. The man who came found what was needed and went to buy the part. He came back and fitted it. He ended up being with me for about 40 minutes and all I had to pay for was the part he bought. Very good service.
Both RAC and AA are very good, stick with one of them.
I have been with the Automobile Association for many years and find them satisfactory.
I ran out of fuel, yes stupid I know. The RAC came out within 1/2 an hour and brought 3 gallons of fuel, put it in the car and then made sure it started up ok. I only had to pay for the fuel, can't beat that.

Thank you all for your suggestions, we already have house insurance with the AA but will look at both of them. Cheers rosy.
Dont know whats the best but Im with Kwikfit. It is a lot cheaper than the big boys. I will find out if its any good if I have to use it!
you may get a special dual insurance price with AA
The latest Which? report on breakdown services has only three Recommended Providers out of about a dozen.
In order...LV Britannia Rescue, Gem Motor Assist and the AA.
GEM motoring assist are very good - I used them for years.

I don't need them at the moment as my car and bike are both covered by the manufacturers, but I will return to GEM when the free cover is finished.

They are probably all OK until you need them. I think it also depends on where you live. If it's in/near a city then fine but I live in a quieter part of Dorset and have twice had to sit on the roadside alone, once on a dark raining night for 2 hours before the AA turned up (and I think they often franchise it out to local garages rather than send their own dedicated people).
I have been with Britannia Rescue for years and only used them once. I have no complaints.

This may help:-

I agree that the AA and RAC are probably still the best two, although I have used Green Flag and they were very good too.
The best way I've found to keep costs down (always have the full cover insurance) is to play them off against each other.
Year 1 - go to, say AA. Quote as a Newbie could be £80 (costs indicative)
Year 2 - AA renewal quote could be £140, so go to RAC as a Newbie for £80
Year 3 RAC renewal quote could be £140, so go to AA as a 'come back to us client' for £80
Year 4 - etc, etc, etc

It's worked for me
I have been with Green Flag for many years. I personally have only needed them twice.
I swear by the AA, not the cheapest but they are the best.

Thank you all for your replies, knew I could depend on AB

P.S. great idea from (crafty)Captain2 I will try that next year.....;o)
Motability car now so I don't pay. But when I did I alternated between AA and RAC getting the 'new member' discount each time.
Years back you could call them even if you were not a member, then join once they turned up!. I knew a lot of people that used that loophole so you only paid if you actually needed them. Was normally a lot cheaper than calling a garage out to repair the car or tow you home.
I get it through my bank now but I also switched each year between RAC and AA. It always stunned me how much better a deal you got as a new member rather than the advantage of loyalty.

Thank you Eddie51, does that mean I would have to join the AA to take breakdown insurance out then? Or can I just buy it like I did with the House Ins.That will make it expensive. My heads in the shed with it now I'm afraid.:0( rosy
You can just buy the cover from the AA, that's really what 'being a member' or 'joining' means.
