They only do it in our lane, but when we start out, drive the few yards from the end of the drive and stop at the turning onto the road it makes a funny juddering noise. The as I come home again and slow down to turn into the drive (clutch down, brakes on) we sometimes hear it again.
Don't notice it anywhere else and the brakes seem to work OK.

The lane was retarmaced a couple of years ago and has fallen leaves on it.
Are you braking hard and the ABS being activated due to the falen leaves on the new tarmac?
Possibly ABS as bhg suggests.... have you checked your brake pads for wear?
Additionally, you don't say how often you drive your auto. If it's a few days between uses, I've found that in wet weather conditions, it's truly amazing how fast small rust spots can occur on the brake discs or rotors as they are generally are called here. They're most often made of cast iron which rusts quite readily.

Here in the western U.S., it's fairly dry, but if we have rain or wet snow and don't use the car for 2 or 3 days, we'll experience what your describe but only for the first application of the brakes, since that, apparently, removes the existing rust…
Clanad - yes but it happens when he arrives home again when the rust should have been worn off the brakes.
I think it's just a coincidence Dance, is there a Scraping sound? if so, pads, or as said by Clanad.
All kinds of scenarios can be constructed to make a point, but maybe, even though the brakes are not chirping (meaning the pads need changed) they could be warped, which isn't uncommon. If so, the rust could easily form throughout a day on the discs and the when the brakes are applied only the "high" spots on the disc are having more pressure applied than the valleys. Just a thought, but as someone has already suggested, you should have them check.

Most brake shops will perform an inspection without charge… hoping you'll do your service there, of course...
I would be REALLY interested in the solution, assuming you find it.
Providing you don't go to KF, otherwise you may need a new engine+Service.
Not in my experience, TWR.
Nor mine Derek.

Well the garage couldn't find anything wrong with brakes or clutch, 'bring it back if it gets worse'

No we don't brake hard at that junction, just glide to a stop and creep out till we can see.
It sounds to me like the ABS is cutting in early.
