I have just found a photo I took with petrol at 63.9p a litre I think was taken about 1994. Is this about right or could it be longer ago than that?

Just had a quick look in her book ... there's a range of dates when the price was 63.9p a litre, due to prices going up and down, etc. The earliest date is 30/9/96 and the latest date is 29/11/98. During these dates, the price fluctuated from a minimum of 59.9p to a maximum of 68.7p. Incidentally, the price dropped to 61.9p until 19/3/99, then on 20/3/99 the price...

had a quick look on google david it was 1997 by two peoples accounts on a site
Makes you think, doesn't it? I'm sure that petrol was about a pound per litre a decade ago, but I can't be sure.
I meant to say "I think petrol was a pound per litre."
I'll give you a definite answer on this later.
My missus has a book that she's kept since around 1990, that she fills in religiously ... it's for her petrol use ... she writes down the mileage on her car, how much fuel she puts in and the fuel (unleaded) price ... she like to know how many miles per gallon she's getting.
She's at work at the mo. When she gets back, I'll have a look at it and report back on here later ;)

Prices probably vary from region to region - we're in NW England - hope this helps :)

This price is for unleaded petrol by the way. I'm assuming you have a photo with the price of petrol in the background - it could be leaded petrol (I think it was still available around this time), which I think was slightly more expensive than unleaded.
more to the point when was it 4 gallons to the £ ...aaah yes Adam was a lad.
I, too, have records going back many years and agree with Giz's answer.
Incidentally, in 1994 a typical price was between 43 and 49 pence per litre.

Thanks everyone, I needed to upload it to a site which needs a date and I thought it was earlier so a good thing I didn't get it wrong. They only need to be approximate but closer now than I was.
What a neat bit of detective work folks. 10/10
Given that unleaded petrol near me (NW as per Gizmonster) is currently 129p/litre, that means it has doubled in price in 18 years. Is that reasonable? - I can't decide. Anybody's salary doubled, naturally, in that time? (ie if I was doing the same job then and now).

"When leaded petrol went up to 50p per gallon (i.e. 11 pence per litre) around 1975 it was all over the papers."

Good job nobody struck a match!
Could she sell this book as a Kindle? Shame it doesn't include diesel prices as well.
I call her for being such a geek and still keeping records of her fuel usage, but this is the 2nd time that I've checked her book for someone on here .... maybe not so geeky after all lol :P
When we first didn't get 3 gallons for a pound, we said we would have to sell the car, more likely take it to the tip if I remember it correctly.
