I have recently bought a 3 year old of the above model (only 6500 on the clock)--and read that fuel consumption should be approx. 49mpg. (urban).I have kept a check for the last 3 months and it is working out at about 39mpg!!--Should these figures that are given be taken with a" pinch of salt" or could there be a problem?

With a pinch of salt kenny1234.
Published fuel economy figures are only to compare different models not what you get in the real world. Different drivers vary so much in how they drive one person may get 10 or more MPG than another with the same car.
Depends where you read your figures from really. Most manufactures are 'conservative' to say the least when they publish performance figures. You are better off going on an independent site like Parkers or something which are more 'real world' Hope this helps.

But 39mpg sounds a little low really....
I agree 39 mpg sounds low, I would expect to get 45 to 50 or over.
But I do drive very 'frugally' , hardly ever go over 65mph and always look ahead so that I can ease off the 'gas' rather than have to actually use the brakes.
I can get over 70 mpg on a run in my 1.7 Zafira diesel.
I'm convinced that manufacturers test drivers go barefoot for an ultra-sensitive touch on the accelerator, and do their testing in East Anglia to come up with their fuel figures. My 1.8 diesel is rated exurban at 50mpg, and that's what it can display on the dashboard readout. On filling up, I find it's been doing 40mpg if I've been driving very carefully. That's a whopping 20% error. Mentioned it to dealer, who asked "What do you want it to read? We can set it to read anything you like!"
It's worse than that. They do it on a rolling road, with a warm engine, no wind resistance and no one in the car. 39 around town doesn't sound too bad.

Thanks everyone----
I also recently bought a Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic with 5400 miles on it. The first full tank of petrol gave me 48mpg, including two decent trips. The second tank full which was used mainly for local driving, i.e. short trips, gave 43mpg.

I'm reasonably satisfied with that.
