Hi, looking to buy a second-hand 4x4.
Anyone have any recommendations whether Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Landrover, Mitsubishi etc are the best, and why?

What do you want it for?
The suggestions would be different for a 'soft-roader'as opposed to an 'off-roader'
Depends what your usage is really, crossing mountains and farmland, pulling horses or caravans, looking trendy in the city, school runs?
I'd buy Japanese if I were you, Landrover ( Discovery, Range rover etc ) not very reliable.

What are you going to use it for,
Towing a horsebox, Birding or just driving to footie matches?
How much have you got to spend?
It all makes a difference.
suzuki vitara and as chance would have it - I know someone who has one for sale!
Never !, fgt lol.
Excuse me tony?

Very reliable, going strong after 17 years what more could you want?

It's going to be the family car but we live in a rural area and have a 200 yard potholed lane leading to our house. Previous car suffered numerous problems with suspension and steering and I thought a jeep type vehicle would be more sturdy in this respect.
Other than this it will be used on the road so economy and ride are valid considerations. ta G.
Excuse me tony?
you knowing someone who has one for sale.
I'd still recommend Japanese ( Toyota Hilux are very good ).
Well G all your prays are answered - are you in northern ireland?
Tony lol
Honda CRV. Has been around for donkeys so there is one for all budgets and was (when I did the research) the third most reliable 4x4 behind the Honda HRV (now discontinued) and the Suzuki Grand Vitara (also a good bet).
There you are, shoota agrees with you, FGT :-)
lol box
Pssssst fgt, boxy is after some commission !.
one word of warning - check the rate of road tax before you buy. Large diesel 4x4's have been taxed heavily since 2006 - I looked at a Jeep Cherokee for towing a caravan - annual road tax £475!
my 4x4 is cheap to run!
