Would a faulty gearbox have any effect on fuel consumption ?
If so , how much of a bearing ?

Yes it would if you had 'lost' one or more of the higher gears.

What's the fault with it?

If the reverse light switch is faulty it's unlikely to effect the fuel use.

If you've lost 4th and 5th gear it's very likely to effect fuel use.

All gears are selectable - it just makes an ' errrrring ' sound when driving - i've been told by the garage that it is the gear box

Any additional friction in the gearbox would mean more power required to drive the engine so in this case yes.

To start the Gear Box wants checking for oil, Fuel consumption, Very little, do you find the noise on the left hand/Right hand turn? if so, UJs on the drive shafts.
