To all courteous motorists (all of us, I'm sure...)

With regards pulling out of a side-road onto a busy main road or changing lanes on a busy motorway out of the following:

  • A (left) hand of acknowledgement held up against the rear-view mirror;
  • a flash or two of the opposite indicator;
  • a couple of flashes of the hazard lights;
  • something else; or
  • nothing?
  1. ... How do you thank people if they let you out in front of them?
  2. How do you like to be thanked if you let someone else out in front of you?
  3. Do you respond to their gesture of thanks?

I would have added:

  • Or a quick hand-shandy and a bottle of pop?

But I won't, because I'm neither crude nor immature.

Being a trucker, its a thumbs up out of the window, or if the vehicle can't see me, I do a left, right, left, right flash of the indicators.

as a trucker firstly we always appreciate motorists who let us out if someone lets me out infront i respond with a leftright left right flash of the indicators as for being thanked this is a totally new concept to me as a truckdriver generally a nice wave of the hand will sufice if i let someone out infront of me i will respond back with a flash of my lights to another motorists gesture of thanks to show i acnowledged it

A left hand job every time.

I'm all for the PS... and I don't think you are at all crude and immature..

few blinks of the hazard lights and a flash of the headlights usually conveys your welcome
When I was driving it was a raised hand or a flash of the indicators if someone gave way to me.

I'd hope they did the same if I gave way to them.
Flash of indicators or head light to acknowledge thanks... no hazard lights in my day!!!!
Left hand of acknowledgement in front of mirror.
I have been driving on some occasions and have let people out and they have been so busy waving at me that they nearly crash into me. Which always looks comical, but is pretty scary.

Whats with the old left-right-left business?, why not the hazards for a couple of blinks?

Does a different sequence such as right-left-right mean something else?

If someone lets me out of a junction or lets me change lanes on normal roads, I usually put my hand up to thank them, but if it's on the motorway, or I am driving my works van I usually flash the indicators left-right-left.

There is nothing worse than letting someone out of a junction and they don't thank you, puts me off letting anyone else out, which can only add to queues.
