I have an 03 reg mondeo 2lt tdci. I had the front discs and pads replaced dec 09 as they were worn and it sailedthrough it's mot at end of Dec 09 with no advisories. I have now noticed what I can only described as a grating sound? This is present on braking but also intermittently when driving along, as though the brakes are binding somehow (and this may sound stupid but is when driving is is more pronounced when the car is driving left round a bend!)

I want to take the car back to the same garage but don't know wnough about cars and want to know if this is the front brakes, and if so why is this problem occuring when the discs and pads have been replaced and if it is something else why was it not picked up as an advisory in the mot?

Thanks for your help

it could be the wheel bearings rather than the brakes.
In my experience, if it's more noticeable when cornering, it's likely to be wheel bearings.

Is there any reason then why this wasn't picked up on the MOT or is this something they don't inspect?

In addition to my original post I also meant to say that when braking, there is also a pronounced 'juddering' the steering wheel shakes, this is exactly the same symptom as when the front discs and pads need replacing.
the bearings can go at any time, they may not have been noticable when the MOT was done.

I had a commerical vehicle last month that needed a new wheel breaing on the Friday, got it fixed and another one broke the following Tuesday.

The bad roads at the moment certainly seem to be causing a lot of similar stories

Hi it seems as if you "Warped disk on the front of your car, I would take the car back to whom replaced the Disks +pads, to me they have fitted CHEAP replacements, I suggest this time & time again, Get a person that has Knowledge with Mechanics to check your brakes before, then take it from there " Do not be fobbed off"
The juddering when braking 'could' also be a buckled wheel
