One of my family has just bought a V reg Merc A - Class and, apart from the usual ignition/door keys, it came with a strange, red, plastic key type thing. Does anyone have any idea what it might be for? It's not mentioned in the handbook.

Thanks,

easy to carry in a wallet or purse.

from google

Alarm keys where appropriate. 1 black 1 red.
I like to think it's the key to happiness :-)
wow, do you think there's a spare?

Sorry people, I'm on my sister's lappy and got a dodgy internet connection.

NoKno, I can't access that link. It says it's forbidden!

Sara, it's been described to me over the phone and it definitely didn't sound like one of those. But thanks for taking the time to answer anyhow.

I'll suggest that it could be either an emergency key or a radio removal key. I don't know why they didn't just phone the dealer that the car came from! I had another idea, maybe it could be to unlock the petrol cap? Or would that have been too obvious? Never owned a Merc so I'm pretty clueless.
Aprilis, this very important key will open a compartment under the carpet in your trunk. You may retrieve from aforementioned compartment a rather large windey uppy thing which inserts into an orifice in your grille and can be used to crank you up when in dire straights.
if not, it may disable the airbag at the front, should you use a child seat. my regular car key does mine, the switch being in the passenger door frame, kind of!

An alarm key sounds viable. Thanks carrot.

I'm rather liking Snags's answer though!

NoKno, this damned internet connection is a pain in the posterior. I'm still waiting for the page to load on that second link!
is it like the key on the right in my second link ?

we now need to know !
..or is it 'straits'?

Very useful information there Commander Stewey. Thank you.
:-D
Does it lift the aerial when it is pushed right down?

Just rang Mr Aprilis and he's also of the opinion it's an alarm key.

NoKno, sorry to keep you hanging, got a dodgy modem here that keeps deciding to stop working. Mr Apes says it's similar to that BMW wallet key. It's red plastic, approximately and inch and a half long, half an inch wide and it's got 3 little metal terminals on the end. Having not seen the thing myself it's a bit difficult to know precisely what it looks like and that's all the info I've been given.
how the frig am i going to sleep properly now ffs?
Question Author
Doesn't sound like it's that sort of key PB, but thanks anyway.
Question Author
Sorry people but I'm going to have to throw the towel on this bad internet connection.

Thank you to everyone that answered. (Especially you snags! We had a family bereavement today and the laugh was very welcome indeed).
