Ok i shall expand. The last two cars i have owned (a 4x4 import, which i knew would be expensive for parts, and a automatic citroen c5) have been really expensive to get repairs done. Admittedly the C5 is riddled with technology which at 5 years old (and outside warranty) keeps having problems. The exhaust has just gone and could have cost 500 for a new one, the problem was fixed by a skilled welder for 100, but now the electronic engine management has gone and i an awaiting a quote for a fix, and expecting this to run into the hundreds. Just what i need right before christmas. So... Is there a car which is simple (ie not expensive) to repair with widely available reasonably costing parts. cheers, Richard

i had a citroen ax spree 1.5 diesel. it was a great little car. i bought it for 400 and it lasted 5 years and sold it for 50.

hardly cost anything to run and only spent money on the usual tyres, exhausts etc

Peugeot 306 diesel, very reliable, good bodywork, and parts readily available, we have had one for five years, it has been a great car.
i intend to get another. i've looked on autotrader and ebay and there's plenty secondhand.

Thanks for the comments. The ax is a bit small for my needs and i am not wedded to citroen. The mechanic tells me it will be around 300 to sort of the mess caused when the engine management system glitched

People tell me that fords are easy to find parts for because they are so common.

Is this true?
Or is there another make that i should consider
Hi Richard, I have found fords to be very reliable and the spares are fairly cheap and always available, I have a ford escort 1.8 diesel for work, I have had it 5 years and touch wood it has been superb, it has done 160,000 miles on the same engine, my son has a ford escort 1.8si, this has done 150,000 miles again been a very good car, the fiesta is a great little car, but maybe too small for you, the only downside with ford if any is the bodywork, but my wifes peugeot as mentioned before is N reg and does not have one speck of rust, good luck, Ray
