There's a car for sale with no service history (it's done 18,000 miles) and no MOT as it's 04 reg. Is it a bit dodgy to buy a car with no service history / MOT paperwork coz there's no record of the mileage so it could have been clocked?

I would'nt touch that unless i found out more about it . most new cars are serviced by a franchised dealer for the first 3 years at least and that history should be available, why isnt it?

The bloke says he's done it himself!
I sold a car recently at 142,000 with a full main dealer history, it was only 3 years old. Less than a week later it was advertised as 76,000 miles service history mislaid, judge for yourself
If you are serious about the car, get an RAC inspection done. Batter the price down because of the service history, and remember you will have the same problem if you sell it.

Alternatively walk away. There are plenty more fish on the beach (or is it pebbles in the sea?)
look for the tell tale signs, wear on the steering wheel, and drivers seat, wear on the pedals and drivers footwell.

Thanks. I think i'm going to give that one a miss!
It could have been clocked I suppose, I sold a Citroen AX about 10 years ago, I had it from new for 18 mths and it had done c24,000 miles. When I parted X ed it, the dealers were selling it with 9,000 on the clock. I had never had it serviced at a main dealer so no real service history.

My current car is a KA, again I have had it from new. It is just over 3 years old, done less than 20,000 miles and still doesn't have a full service history as I refuse to pay main dealer prices for a service! Not that I am selling it, I love it.

Just trying to say that just because it doesn't have a service history doesn't mean it isn't genuine.
I agree with cheeky chops, I had a vw polo which I bought at 1 year old,and after several main dealer dramas and bad repairs, decided i could do a better job. It was in super condition and had no problems. I sold it for similar price as one with history 4 years later with 156k! I still see it about 9 years on!
