If they are the same as most cars there are small, usually stiff small press catches at the bottom of the steel rods that go into the seat.

Thanks for your answer. I took them into a BMW dealer and the servicing guy popped them out. They are, as you say held in by clips and the trick is to extend the headrest fully and then put a clenched fist around each rod, pull upwards and towards you. Definitely a technique involved. Am happy now as i dont have cloth headrests with leather interior anymore. :)
