What car to buy next?

I would like a 1.4 engine, medium size hatchback, up to say 4 years old, RELIABLE, not too worried about appearances or handling but am not keen on Fiats. i can go up to about £8k budget. What should i buy?

So far i am considering Toyota Auris, VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsas. Any thoughts?

My choice there would be VW,
we nearly always buy German Cars.
our reps have a choice of fiesta, polo, corsa & peugeot 208 (was 207).
out of all of them for reliability i would say the polo and that's based purely on looking after a large co car fleet and we never seem to get much trouble with them, if any
You might also look at the Mazda 2 or Mazda 3 - very well screwed together and very reliable - good prices too.

My Mazda 3 (admittedly the turbo version) is one of the best cars I've ever owned - now six years old & running beautifully.

I'd have a look at a Skoda............

I'll look into the Mazdas.

What other cars are german anyone?

Any support for Japanese makes?
As crafty says, Skoda (and Seat) are part of the VAG group and share many parts with VW, Audi etc.

The older model Skoda Fabias weren't as good as the VW equivalents, the new ones are better ...
audi do a litte A1, its very nice
Honda Jazz?
I was going to say Honda Jazz.

Gets good reports in Which magazine.
Honda Jazz - well thought of, but quite expensive for what you get - the basic models are quite err 'basic'.
I'd recommend a VW Polo too. I loved mine!
I had a Polo some years ago - worst car ever built, broke down every month without fail. People seem to like them but not me.

About 10 days ago we traded my Audi Avant for a Skoda Yeti, 2.0ltr, tdi, 170bhp, 4x4 which OH is going to drive, I've got her cast-off BMW 320d for the time being.
(Roughing it!)
Hyundai - mine is a little runaround - but you can get larger engines.
Love mine - have had a variety of makes but really like this one. Good luck
Honda for me every time...not only a reliable car but the most comfortable driving position I have found....and I love the gearstick.
Honda Jazz without question, excellent reliability and build quality.
This must be very confusing for you, everyones favourites being mentioned, I have always had German cars, Audi, VW so you can guess what my favourite is. :)
On my 4th Polo - now have a 1.4 TDI , Blue motion. Love it. No car tax - brill mpg. Haven't explored all the "bells and whistles" yet - haven't had it long. Worst thing - have to breathe in to get it into garage.
also Seats' are VW group, share same engine as Polo Bluemotion
I would agree with Baldric- VWs are very reliable!
