MONEY-minded TV producers are keen for their successful TV series to run and run. But exactly how many good storylines can you sqeeze out of a group of characters

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It has been four years and 80-odd episodes sinceBuffy the Vampire Slayer's first screen appearance. The show's writers, however, don't seem to thinkshe is loosing her bite.Series five is currently in production. It will see Buffy create a new base camp and new characters are being introduced, including Buffy's previously unheard of little sister Dawn.

The writers of the award-winning ITV show Cold Feet say they will do one more series. Friendsis still shooting and new series of Casualty and ER just keep coming.

For TVproduction companies, seven is the magic number. If an internationally successful show can reach its seventh series the producers can normally retire for life on the repeat and syndication fees.
