American Dad

12:37 Wed 30th Jun 2010 |

American Dad is widely held to be one of the best US comedies. The series is written by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame. Seth also stars in the cartoon as Stan Smith the central character alongside Wendy Schaal (Francine – the wife), Scott Grimes (Steve - the son) and Rachael MacFarlane (Hayley – the daughter, and also Seth’s real life sister).

Fans of Family Guy are sure to like this new comedy series from the same writer. The style of the animation is very similar as are the satirical comedy and character portrayals.  American Dad is considerably politically-orientated and everything you could conceive about the USA's current state of fear mongering and distrust is put beneath a microscope and parodied mercilessly.

The show centres on the domestic life of its nominal title character, Stan Smith, a staunchly conservative Republican CIA agent, and self-proclaimed patriot. He is married to Francine Smith, a fairly ditzy housewife who is trying to make up for a wild youth. Their two children are Hayley Smith, a passionately left-wing college-aged activist, and Steve, an awkward teenage nerd. The Smith family is also in possession of two bizarre nonhumans — Roger, an escaped alien from Area 51 who Stan is covertly housing in defiance of his employer, and Klaus, a goldfish whom the CIA implanted with the brain of an East German Olympic skier.
