I think you are thinking of "A Mind To kill" in which he played the roll of DCI Noel Bain. they used to show it on Channel Five.:-D

It was also shown on S4C in Wales in Welsh. The cast were mainly Welsh actors and 2 versions of each programme were made at the same time, one in Welsh and the other in English. Good series too.
