Have you noticed the less talent a comedian has the more they resort to swearing and crudity . Female comedians are frequently the worse. Over the years I've seen clever comedians, as they or their script writers run out of ideas, introduce more infantile behaviour and crudeness. It is significant that all the lasting comedy shows , like Benny Hill, Porridge, Two Ronnies, etc. are those which do not contain crudity and an obsession with bodily functions. Little Britain, Ross and Grant please note.

Im not a fan of crudity but the benny hill show did have a fair amount of smut as did the carry on films of the late 60s/ 70

I preferred the carry on films of the 50's and the ealing comedies

Benny Hill... not crude?

am I thinking of the wrong Benny Hill?
Not....Jack Dee

The point is Benny Hill played on the imagination , he used inference and innueneno as did Morecombe and Wise , to my knowledge not once did they actually swear .
Any idiot can swear and be offensive, as after the 9 o'clock watershed, it takes talent to entertain an intelligent audience but maybe that's the problem .
he had a bunch of big breasted women trotting around in skimpy bikinis and suggestive outfits. I remember feeling offended.. and I was a child!
Modeller I agree todays "comedians" are totally talentless always having to rely on the F word to get laughs! Humour based on bodily functions and lavatorial humour are a no no for me!!
Sarcasam is the lowest form of wit Alot of this so called humour is based on sarcasm.
loads of comedy now is political too - not funny

You are right Sara , Benny Hill did go a bit to far at the time, maybe that's why he is not repeated as often as the other repeats, but it and the Carry on Films were suggestive not crude and no swearing. Do you remember Dave Allen who used to take the Mickey out of politicians and hypocritical clerics? He was clever but unfortunately as his ability diminished so he also resorted to semi-porn, we never see any of his shows repeated.
world of difference between carry on cabby and carry on up the khyber, to much innuendo makes it a grubby film
Question Author
The ability to appreciate subtlety and innuendo requires at least a modicum of intelligence. I think the first answer by no.knowledge's proves the point perfectly .
I do understand innuendo, more importantly overuse of innuendo. it explains its demise.

I dont understand why people ask for opinions and then insult people who's opinions differ from theirs..

You are right cazzz overuse of any words or terms especially in the abstract lose their original meaning and impact . Which is where intelligence plays its part in its interpretation. The Ealing comedies were excellent. As far as the Carry on Films are concerned I think their quality of humour deteriorated over time. Please note my answer was not in response to your's but rather to that of no.knowledge ( an apt name ) who was the first to reply.
sadly, this is nk's humour.

you may get used to it ;o)
