A popular misconception, I'm afraid. According to Ray Davies (and he should know), "Terry and Julie" were just imaginary characters. While Davies understands how people make the link - Terrance Stamp and Julie Christie were big stars at the time and were in fact starring in Far From The Madding Crowd on cinema screens as the song was a hit - he maintains that his Terry and Julie are not based on them (the characters are meant to be younger than Stamp and Christie for one thing) or anyone else in particular. They're just generic names that were typical of many 60s yongsters.
