I'm going to be predictable and say 'Fawlty Towers', because I've been watching it regulalry since 1975 - afriend had one of the very first VHS machines, and even now, it still makes me laugh out loud. The skill is the tiny plot bombs dropped at regular intervals which knit together into a squirming whole by the end - e.g. the 'two doctors' who are given a room without a bath - each time one of them goes to the corridor batrhoom, Basil is behaving oddly - to them - with good reason to the rest of us. The high level is compunded by their being only twelve gems ever made - pure, and possibly unbeatable, comedy class.
I read the title of this and immediately thought of faulty towers before I saw the rest of your question. Has me in stitches. Along the same line in monty python - although its not tv, the film life of brian cracks me up every time.
I agree that Fatty Owls is probably the best, mainly due to the fact that a limited number were made. Using that same example I would like to see again on TV, "Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggit".Not too many were made and I would like to see if it is as funny as my memory tells me.
Difficult...but when all's said and done I'm going to have to vote for "Blackadder" :)

Oddly enough, I've just been sent this link, where the BBC is asking people to vote for their favourite TV sitcom ever: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/
for me its got to be father ted closely followed by i'm alan partridge ,with an honourable mention going to 'scrubs' which is the best thing on telly at the moment.
Father Ted and Blackadder. Apart from the odd "classic" moment (eg Del falling thorugh the bar) I've never got into Fools and Horses, ditto Warty Towels (although Basil beating up his car made me laugh at the time.)

sorry einstein i mean mindbullets
Sorry folks for the tardiness of my post.....anyways....I can't pick one so it would be from this short list...Family Guy, The Young Ones and Red Dwarf
Can't narrow it down I'm afraid, but here goes : U.S. - Cheers, Frasier, Simpsons. U.K. - Porridge, One Foot in the Grave. I was at home recovering after a hernia operation last year and an old episode of Cheers caused me agony because I couldn't stop laughing. One Foot in the Grave had some great moments & the writer also had the confidence to let a joke wait (the large picture of Victor in the hall that they kept walking past without commenting until the end of the episode). Porridge has stood the test of time remakably well. Surprised no-one has mentioned Seinfeld (never really watched so I don't know myself) as people are very adamant in their praise for it normally.
Fawlty Towers has to be the one. I'm also a big fan of Alan Partridge but the second series was a let down, which I think is why FT is so good in that there were only 12 Episodes but each one was a classic there were no turkeys and each one has stood the test of time. Does anybody remember Chance in a million, that was brilliant but I don't think its ever been repeated, also another great one but also little known was the Peter Principle. have watched sienfield but thinks its a bit rubbish, i think its like most american comdey shows which are written by large teams of writers, they are funny but they dont have that killer edge like UK ones do. For example I doubt many people could pick out key moments from cheers or seinfield they are just generally funny, but things like the Dinner scene in the Germans episode or the 'Don't tell him Pike' line in Dad's army are what sets the two styles apart.
Aswell as some of those that have already been said, I'd have to give a mention to The League of Gentleman, and The Day Today, with Chris Morris and Alan Partridge.
Here's the BBC A-Z for all those that we'd forgotten. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/atoz/a.shtml

I suppose cartoons count, never really crossed my mind.
No votes for "Bottom"? oh my god! Widdle myself laughing at episodes even though i've seen them all willions of times. also "Young Ones" - more generally anything that has Ade Edmondson or Rick Mayall involved in it. Blackadder a close second, Fawlty Towers, Good Life, Early (as in 1970's) series' of "Last of the summer wine", Red Dwarf, KYTV, Porridge all joint 3rd. Never saw the funny side of One foot in the grave i'm afraid.
