Does anyone know why American History X was not even nominated for an Oscar, or Golden Globe- when moronic rubbish like of Forest Gump, and Titanic got a crop of them?- and yes I know this question is years out of date, but i just wondered thats all.

American History X has a notoriously messed up past, having been directed by two people, the first left part way through because of artistic differences with Ed Norton, he subsequently took over. So that may be a reason. Also it's not mainstream enough, it may have been an art house indepenent film to start with. Also its too dangerous to win an oscar. Forrest Gump was a nice film, they always do well, it showed the states in a positive light, and one man triumphed over all against him, the classical oscar winning story. Titanic was just massive, made loads of money and had good effects. I suppose it was quite revolutionary because of the scale of the set.
controvercial film

So does anyone think it was worthy of any awards?

Definitely! The performances and just the whole feel of the film were disturbing, unsettling but extremely powerful. I wince just thinking about Edward Norton stamping on that guy's head and the pure malevolance he exuded. I'll lower the tone now by saying how hot he looked in his prison uniform!
It was ok - but just that - ok.
Bit laboured and not really worthy of a second look. Suppose its considered a bit of a cult classic but more to do with its content that the quality of the film.
Surely the biggest travesties in Oscars history are that the Shawshank Redemption never got a thing and Scorsese has never been recognised for any of his films.
Shawshank and Scorsese may not have won any oscars, but at least they've been nominated.

Never really thought about it...but agree it was a thought provoking, yet excellent film. Can't recall how old it is (6-8yrs?), but I think, as others have said, it wasn't a "safe" film back then. Surely, with more cutting films like Crash (allbeit not as harsh) and modern day controversy in Brokeback, it might've been nominated in current day?

Shawshank..........classic!

Edward Norton was nominated for an oscar as best actor in American History X
