Can anyone tell me the name of an Australian series which was on late on Wednesday nights in the mid seventies. The main character was called John West I think. He was a sort of 'godfather' type character and into a lot of dodgy deals.

John West? Did he sell dodgy tins of tuna?

Well I don't know it but I just did a character search on IMDb and came up with this, which is Australian and made in the 70's.

Thanks for that - it was indeed 'Power Without Glory' - a mini series (more like a soap really). It was set in a small Australian town in about the 1930's or 40's I think. He was the head of a family and it covered several years when he built up a business and did whatever he could to make money and protect his family, including 'getting rid of' some of his business rivals. Good stuff - they don't make them like that anymore.

PS Did you wonder how I knew it was on Wednesdays? I used to go to Speedway at White City and it was on when I got home about 11.30!
