Good point Mally
They do the same in EE. It's a soap thing.
No desire for streetcars ?!!!
More reliable to get away
I think it's to make it more official looking that they're leaving for good
I'm sure there is an element of visual 'underlining' in the image.

A stranger coming in from outside to take the character away, rather than a neighbor who is likely to spend the entire journey to the station / airport quizzing the character about a possible return, with cameras and microphones to capture the conversation for the viewers' benefit.
there is actually a "street cars "taxi business in Richmond street manchester
the drivers say they get sick of being asked if Steve's working today
There is a Street Cars private hire business near me in the West Mids, too.
What difference does it make?

I refer you to my post at 15:37.
Fair enough but Steve is Emma's dad so surely it would be free to use Street Cars.

Yes, but that would not allow for the dramatic image of someone 'finally' leaving, which a black cab, and no internal dialogue, provide.
the dramatic effect would be lost if they were filmed standing at a bus stop for half an hour . . .
