it is on BBC i Player if you haven't seen it. I didn't like it at all, and can't understand why they didn't cast a good singer in the role.
Yes
Zellweger was amazing and fully deserved her Oscar
I guess the academy saw differently emmie ! Lol
I loved it and thought hers an amazing portrayal. But then I also enjoyed Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, and they didn’t do their own singing.
Question Author
obviously,
i am a huge fan of Judy Garland, and thought the film a travesty.
Zellweger couldn't sing which was total downer, and seeing how Judy Garland was one of the best of her time and any other,
Question Author
but Zellweger did sing surely and not well enough.
At times, with Rene's mannerisms, I could have been forgiven for thinking I was watching Bridget Jones playing Judy Garland but I quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it a 'great film though. It's not one I would watch again.

i did watch it through in the hope that it would get better, it didn't for me. Seeing how Judy Garland was a superb singer why couldn't they have found someone else who could sing as well... Rene just didn't come across as real. I watched Judy Garland in A Star is Born the other day and that is a brilliant film.
Emmie, have you seen the latest 'A Star is Born' with Lady Gaga?
I watched Judy and was a bit disappointed as I felt it didn't tell us enough about her life, her husbands etc.
I also watched Judy Garland in A Star is Born when it was on quite a while ago now and I seem to remember there were a lot of stills? in the film, can't remember the reason for it so that spoilt it for me.
Watched A Star is Born with Lady Gaga and although I thought she was good, I didn't like Bradley Cooper because I wanted him to smarten up and do something with his unruly hair.
Thought she looked quite like her, but sounded nothing like her - quite a failing for a film about someone with such a distinctive voice. Written by Tom 'Vigil' Edge. The scene where she went to the home of the two 'stage door johnnies' was preposterous.

As I said on another thread, enjoyed the new version of A Star Is Born (not the sort of film I'd normally have watched) - and Lady Gaga really can sing!
Naomi, I believe there is another film of A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand, have you seen that one?
Barsel - Bradley Cooper was playing a drunk and drug-taker - hardly likely to smarten up, that was the whole point!
I saw it a long time ago, Barsel.
Question Author
i watched 20 minutes of a Star is Born with Lady Gaga, that was enough for me. I know that its a modern film but the lazy use of expletives in those 20 minutes killed off any interest i had in it.
Question Author
i enjoyed the one with Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand. But there is no comparison with the Judy Garland version, she was magnificent in it.
This was Judy at the end of her career, when her long-term illnesses and addictions had taken their toll on her voice and her body.
If you look at the reviews of her London concerts, you'll find that the film was pretty faithful to the response she received.

I though RZ was wonderful in the part of Judy and even if some liberties were taken with the time-line of her husbands, etc. it didn't detract from the tragedy of a life that was only 47 years long.
Question Author
i thought she was awful, sorry...
Portraying other people perfectly is not possible. I thought Sheridan Smith did a brilliant job as Cilla, and Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking was superb, but you have to allow some leeway. I watched it and accepted it for what it was.
I watched it and wish I hadn't bothered. Very dull film about someone with such a huge personality.
